In September, 1914, the 1/7th Middlesex battalion went to Gibraltar, the first Territorial Army unit to go abroad. In February, 1915, they returned home and in March they went to France where they joined 23 Brigade of 8th Division. Their first experience of the trenches came on 19-20th March with a two day instructional period with the 2nd Middlesex battalion near Laventie during which 7th Middlesex suffered their first casualties of the war. One of these was Percy Knowers who died from wounds on 23rd March. |
